We welcome the longest day during this, my absolute favourite month. This year it falls on Sunday, 21st June at 09:24 BST.
Maybe it is because it is my birthday month, or maybe we just instinctively welcome the shift that comes with the longest day on the Summer Solstice. Whatever the reason, June feels like the best time of the year. There is such a simple pleasure in being outside for longer and eating meals outdoors with family and friends. We love to make the most of the longer days.
I am not saying I rise with the sun every single morning, but I definitely get up earlier. I make sure I step outside with a warm herbal tea before the rest of the house is awake. Sometimes Jen and Woody head out on the heath early, and it feels like a little bit of magic to start the day.
Finding Your Rhythm in the Summer Season
We are always mindful of living with the seasons, and right now, we can fully celebrate the natural flow of summer. This time of year invites us to embrace its high energy through more outdoor activity and lots of social connection. It is the peak of ‘yang’ energy in the seasonal cycle, which is a wonderful contrast to the deep, restful ‘yin’ we experience in the winter.
You can align with the season simply by maximizing your morning light and spending more intentional time in nature. It doesn't have to be complicated - open the back door and let the fresh air in to shift your entire mood.
Nourishing Your Body with Seasonal Foods
One of the easiest ways to celebrate the season is by eating fresh, antioxidant-rich foods like berries and stone fruits. Keeping hydrated is key, but so is taking advantage of what grows locally.
Here in the UK, seasonal foods right now include rhubarb, elderflower, nettle, spinach, raspberries, gooseberries, plums, apricots, strawberries, and cherries. You will also find courgette, cucumber, peas, lettuce, chard, fennel, and rocket in abundance. Adding just a few of these to your family meals brings the energy of the season right to your kitchen table.
The Meaning Behind the Summer Solstice
This year, we welcome the Summer Solstice on Sunday, June 21st. It's the longest, brightest day in the northern hemisphere. As the sun ascends to its highest elevation, that great ball of fire appears to hover in place in the sky.
The word solstice is actually derived from two Latin words: 'sol' which means 'sun' and 'sistere' which means 'to stand still.' I absolutely love that image, and it brings up a beautiful question for those of us juggling a million things. Can we stand still for a few days?
Grounding Yourself as the World Speeds Up
The magic here is that the solstice naturally creates this space for a pause. Cancer season begins with the Summer Solstice each June, bringing a sensitivity to our world. We are asked to be still, feel deeply, and choose our next step from a grounded place.
I often remind the women I work with that the most important decision you can make this time of year is to focus on what keeps you grounded. As the world speeds up and the calendar fills with summer plans, having a tether is essential. You do not need to overhaul your life to find that grounding.

Simple Summer Solstice Rituals for Your Daily Routine
Combining the arrival of the Summer Solstice and the energy of the season is the perfect excuse to take time to invest in a small ritual. Many of us use this time to reflect on the goals or intentions we set during the winter solstice and adjust them gently for the next six months.
You can also celebrate nature simply by gathering wildflowers on a walk or being intentional about the place nature holds in your life. It is not about adding another massive task to your to-do list, but rather making the things you already do feel a little more meaningful.
Focusing on Connection and Gentle Self-Care
This seasonal shift also asks us to think about our own self-care. It can be so easy to run on empty when you are caring for teens, ageing parents, or just trying to keep the house running.
Because the current season is emotional in nature, it calls us to focus on our emotional well-being and to strengthen the relationships that are important to us. Take a walk with a friend, sit in the garden with your partner, or just enjoy a quiet moment alone to reconnect with yourself.
Stepping Forward with Intention
In summary, this solstice calls us to mark a shift. It is a beautiful opportunity to move forward with greater self-awareness and intentional action, while still remembering to have fun in the sun.
Your action step for today is simple. Grab your favourite drink, step outside for five minutes of fresh air, and just stand still. Let the energy of the season wash over you, and take a deep breath before stepping back into your busy day.
