Supporting Exam Stress: Simple Habits to Help Your Teen

Exam season is a delicate time for families with teens.  Do you find yourself lingering or pacing outside your teen's door? You want to help, but you don't want to nag. You ask how it's going, and they snap at you. You give them space, and then you feel guilty for not doing more. For parents with teens, exam season is hard—for them, yes. But for you too. You can’t revise for them. You can’t sit their exams. But there are many subtle things you can do to help set the tone at home.

As a parent of four kids, we've learned some doable actions and have been running an exam support session for parents each year.  Take our best advice from parents who have used these techniques and survived exam season.

We are not just cheering them on from the sidelines. As parents, we are carrying so much emotionally during this season. It is exhausting to manage the meal planning, the gentle reminders, and the shifting moods that take over the house.

While we can't take the exams for them, we can help build an environment that feels less frantic. Offering a calmer atmosphere is a gentle, practical way of saying, "I am here," without adding to their mental load.  This doesn't require a massive overhaul of your family routine. It is about small, intentional shifts that ease tension.

In my work, I like to embed powerful little habits with meaning - and don't always go straight toward products.  In this case, essential oils are unsung heroes for the entire family and I'll tell you exactly which ones to use and how to improve study sessions, concentration, sleep, confidence, nerves and relationships.

These little protocols are natural, doable and help you care for your teen when they are overwhelmed.  Best thing - they don't require any words so you can support from the sidelines in a powerful, gentle way.

We know our teens are under an immense amount of pressure to perform. We can help create a physical space that naturally supports their focus, memory, and energy, making their study time actually matter.

One of our favourite ways to beat brain fog is using a study support trio of essential oils. This combination includes Rosemary (which has been shown in multiple studies to boost memory and brain function), alongside Peppermint (for creativity, energy and alertness), and Lemon (to refresh and uplift a heavy mood).

There are two very simple ways to introduce this to your teen. You can put three drops of each oil into a diffuser near their desk. If they prefer something more personal, add one or two drops of each oil to a cotton ball or a handkerchief. They can simply keep it on their desk while they work to inhale that energising aroma whenever they hit a wall.

With my kids, I'd put the oils in the diffuser and we would ALL benefit from the frequencies and the boost in focus.

Studying for hours on end usually leads to diminishing returns. We have found great success using the Pomodoro technique in our house. This is a popular time management method where you focus on work for twenty-five minutes, followed by a five-minute break using a timer.

We love this method because it improves focus, minimises distractions, and prevents the inevitable burnout. During that five-minute break, encourage your teen to try a quick revision reset ritual. It only takes two minutes, but it completely shifts their energy.

The formula is simple: take a deep breath, inhale an essential oil of their choice, stretch the body, and drink a glass of water. Teens tend to gravitate toward grounding or uplifting scents for this break. A favourite is Motivation blend to promote a sense of accomplishment, or a bright citrus like Orange for an uplifting burst of liquid sunshine.

In order to reflect and consolidate all that learning at the end of a stressful day, it is so important that they actually relax. Of course, switching off a racing mind is easier said than done.

Helping your teen destress before bed is an actionable way to show you care. You can start by diffusing calming oils in their bedroom or making a simple room spray to create a tranquil environment before they even walk in.

Right before lights out, offer them a relaxing oil to apply to their wrists, neck, or chest. Teens often love familiar, comforting scents like Lavender (tested and shown to consistently lower nervous tension), Stress Away (does exactly what it says on the label and melts the day away), or Peace & Calming (popular especially among kids to reduce anxious feelings). The Tranquil Roll-On is also fantastic for easing restlessness when sleep feels out of reach - perfect to keep on the bedside table and easy to apply.

The Power of a Warm Bath to Relax a Busy Mind

If your teen is carrying physical tension in their shoulders and neck from hunching over textbooks, water is one of the best ways to help them let it go.

Encourage a warm soak at the end of the day, either in a full bathtub or even just a simple foot bath if they are short on time. You can easily make this more restorative by adding five to fifteen drops of pure essential oils into a handful of Epsom salts. Stir the salts well to disperse the oils, and then add the mixture to the running water.

Lavender or Stress Away are perfect choices here. This delicious sensory ritual truly relaxes the body and mind, creating a clear boundary between study time and sleep time.

How to Handle the Morning of the Exam

Let's face it, when the morning of the actual exam arrives, it is tricky to know what to do or say. Emotions are high, and the best thing we can do is hold the space steady.

For parents, critical logistics mean ensuring they are at the right place at the right time, making sure all their supplies are ready by the door, and offering a nutritious breakfast. In our house, we always rely on eggs for that morning protein.

We have also been using one specific essential oil on exam days for the past six years, and we have no regrets.

Valor is a grounding, powerful blend of Black Spruce, Blue Tansy, Camphor Wood, Geranium, and Frankincense. It's the most incredible blend.  Applying a little to the wrists brings courage and confidence. When I wear it, it makes me brave!  For them, it helps them overcome fear and gets them into the exam with a positive mental attitude.  On these exam days, it works just as beautifully for parents, so do not forget to use some yourself.

Surviving Exam Season Together

When you are in the thick of it, exam season can feel endless. The tension in the house is palpable, and it is completely normal to feel drained by the emotional heavy lifting.

Remember that you are a team. By focusing on the environment—offering a calming scent, a glass of water, or a little ritual without needed words - you are giving your teen the tools they need to regulate their own nervous system.

Take a deep breath, keep the diffusers going, and trust that you are doing a wonderful job supporting them through this. Meet Jennifer Fisher

I used to struggle with finding balance amid the demands of caring for both teens and ageing parents while navigating my own health changes.  Trying to make healthy choices, I often questioned the role of external products and stress in my home and my family.

In my search for solutions, I discovered the power of essential oils - and something just clicked.  They transformed my approach to health and equipped me to help others embrace simple, sustainable lifestyle shifts.  That was more than ten years ago and I've never looked back.

Today, I work with women — especially those in the sandwich generation, caring for teens and ageing parents — who want simple, sustainable solutions that actually fit their lives. My work goes beyond oils. It's about plant-first habits, emotional wellness, and hormone support for a more joyful, connected life.

What I Help With
You’re not unwell, but you know you could feel better.  You’re health-conscious… but still wondering:
  • “Why am I suddenly dealing with skin issues or moods I’ve never had before?
  • “Is it my lotion? My stress? Do I need HRT — or is there another way?”
  • “How do I feel like me again?"
Here’s how I can help:

  • Essential oils for women over 40:  Oils can be life-changing when you know how to use them. I take the guesswork out — pairing the right oils with your daily habits so they become second nature.
  • Moon Cycles & Emotional Balance.  Each moon phase affects your energy, mood, and clarity. I offer intuitive, moon-aligned rituals — paired with oils — to help you feel more grounded and supported throughout the month.
  • Plant-First Habits for Teens & Young Adults:  Let’s raise the next generation to reach for a plant first
  • Caring for Ageing Parents:  If you’re supporting someone with dementia or chronic illness, I’ve walked that road too. Oils offer connection, dignity, and comfort — not just for them, but for you. I teach ways to use aromatherapy and gentle touch to make caregiving more loving and less exhausting.
Why Work With Me?
Because just like you, I’ve been there.  You’re juggling family, work, caregiving — and wondering when it’s your turn to feel well again.
I won’t give you a massive to-do list. I’ll show you how to make plant-based wellness simple, personal, and doable
I don’t just teach oils — I help you use them.

And if you're curious about creating income through this work, I’ll guide you with experience, integrity, and zero pressure.
I’m not anti-medicine. I’m pro-options. Let’s create more awareness, more autonomy, and more space for joy in your health journey.

If that’s you, get in touch—I’d love to help.
