I Gave Up Perfume for 10 Years. Then I Found One I Can Actually Wear.
You reach for your favourite scent each morning without a second thought. But the more you learn about everyday products, the more questions surface about what's really in that bottle, and how it fits with a simpler, low-tox way of living. I know that feeling well. And today I'm so excited to tell you why I've finally stopped missing perfume.
The pull of a signature scent
A familiar fragrance is a small ritual. It anchors the day, connects you to yourself and sets a quiet tone before the rest of the world rushes in. Many of us miss that pleasure when we start questioning conventional perfume.
I stopped wearing commercial perfume over ten years ago. Before that, my idea of a perfect day was an afternoon in a perfumery (I love the one in Liberty, and Harrods has a good one too) building a wish list of scents. I spent a lot of money on perfume and could recognise most of them on other people when I was out and about.
Then I started having some health issues, including hair loss and hormone changes, and I began to wonder what was hiding in my favourite bottle. So I stopped, and my husband stopped too, for the same reasons.
The gap nobody had filled
I adore essential oils and wear them every day. They're part of how I support my mood, my focus and how I want to feel. I even tried making my own perfume with them, but it's hard to create a spritz that doesn't smell like essential oils, so I settled on wearing them straight or layered.
But I'll be honest: they don't always give me that feeling of putting on a beautifully crafted signature scent. And there's been a gap in the fragrance world for years:
- Botanical blends are lovely, but often smell more like layered essential oils than a true fine fragrance.
- Conventional perfumes are full of synthetics that many of us don't want on our skin or in our air.
Even the "clean fragrance" world hasn't fully solved it. There's no single standard for what "clean" means, and "safe synthetics" are often still highly processed, petroleum-derived ingredients. Many of these ingredients are still highly processed and not as simple or transparent as the marketing suggests. If you've ever stood in a shop wondering what actually counts as a better option, you're not alone. Some people notice headaches or skin reactions around synthetic fragrance, and some ingredients have raised questions about hormone disruption.
Meet Wyld Notes: the fragrance I've been waiting for
When I heard about a new line of 100% botanical fine fragrances, I was immediately interested. Now that my discovery set has arrived, I'm completely hooked.
Wyld Notes is genuinely different, and here's why I'm so excited:
Made with a 150-year-old French fragrance house. This is a heritage perfumery, with generations of craft behind it, that has been willing to do things differently. Finally, someone with real fine-fragrance expertise is creating with plants instead of synthetic shortcuts.
Organic, non-denatured alcohol. Most perfumes use denatured alcohol, which is cheaper and easier to price competitively. Wyld Notes paid the extra cost to use organic sugar cane alcohol with no denaturants at all.
Regenerative and wildcrafted sourcing. The botanicals come from regenerative farms, sustainably wildcrafted sources and a carefully vetted fragrance house partner.
Full ingredient transparency, vegan and cruelty free. No mystery "fragrance" line on the label.
Botanical fine fragrance is famously hard to do well, which is exactly why so few brands have managed it. This is a brand that has done the hard thing, and it shows.
The Discovery Set
The discovery set lets you try all five scents on your own skin, which matters because perfume never smells exactly the same on two people. (The set differs slightly between the US and Europe, and the website will show you the right one for where you live.)
The European set includes:
Smokey Ember: the boldest of the collection, a complex journey through woods and sun-drenched landscapes.
Sweet Decadence: warm and irresistible, inspired by freshly baked pastries and nutty treats.
White Lie: soft and powdery with a secret edge, with geranium, rose and grounding vetiver.
Cashmere Creme: rich with vanilla, cherry and warm woods.
Black Book: spiced and magnetic, with nutmeg, osmanthus, warm tonka and guaiac wood.
The North American set includes:
Smokey Ember: the boldest of the collection.
Rugged Wilderness: often a favourite for men, though beautifully unisex.
Timeless Floral: a balanced blend of florals and citrus.
Fireside Citrus: bright citrus with a gentle woody base.
Sweet Decadence: warm, sweet and likely to be very popular.
My first impressionsI ordered on the day of launch and eagerly awaited delivery. It took a week for my box to arrive and each item is nicely presented in its own box. I LOVE the 30ml bottle and they are really gorgeous.
I started with Black Book (because I took the quiz below and it suggested this would be my best scent profile). It smells expensive and intricate. I could mildly recognise tonka at first but then it started to evolve. The quiz was accurate - I do LOVE it and I think it makes a great unisex scent - so I'll recommend it to my husband who has avoided commercial perfumes for years.
Next I tried White Lie which really surprised me with its sunny fruit at the top note but it was anchored with a solid base I couldn't identify (patchouli and vetiver but wow so amazing). I love this and will wear it during the day.
I went with Sweet Decadence next and this one lives up to its name. It's warm and I know my daughters and their friends are going to love this one. I'm not a 'sweet' scent girl but appreciate how lovely this one is. It smells delicious and I know this one will be popular.
Cashmere Creme has cherry and vanilla and sage but the way it's blended I can't detect the individual scents - just the overall luxury. It did remind me of marzipan and baking a little at first but that softened.
Last but not least (I was saving it!) was Smokey Ember. This one is masculine but no need to keep it to the men. It's sooo delicious I just can't stop smelling it. The longer I wear it, but better it gets! This is how I want to smell on a night out - sophisticated and elegant.
In terms of layering, my first blend will be Smokey Ember and Sweet Decadence together.
Not sure where to start? Take the quiz
Here's my favourite bit. On the Wyld Notes website there's a fun, short quiz that helps you find which scent is best for you. It takes just a couple of minutes, and it's a great way to choose before you commit. Just visit the site through my link and click Take the Quiz (in the top right corner) in the menu.
Layer your way to a scent that's yours
One of the joys of botanical blends is how they interact with your individual skin chemistry. Apply a small amount to your pulse points and give it a few minutes. Notice how the top notes fade and the base settles. Then try combining two or three for a scent that feels uniquely yours. It turns fragrance from a fixed product into a personal practice.
Start small
Switching doesn't mean tossing everything at once. Start with one new scent, see how it feels in your routine, and let those small choices add up to a home and personal care collection that matches your values.
